Data Center Storage

How Does Data Center Storage Work?

Core functionality of a data center can generally be distinguished as compute, storage, or network processes.

The storage processes of a data center involve recording and preserving digital information for both active operations and record keeping. A data center’s storage capabilities should be reliable, secure, and easily accessible.

A data center’s storage infrastructure describes the combined hardware, software, and support systems (including physical components as well as technologies) used to perform data storage processes.

On-premises storage infrastructure components of a data center can include hard disk, tape, and solid state drives (SSDs), as well as direct-attached storage devices (DAS), redundant array of independent disks (RAID) devices, storage area networks (SANs) and network-attached storage (NAS).

Data center storage is subject to government laws and procedures regulating data storage and retrieval processes. Many government-adjacent industries must maintain compliance with strict security standards.

The Most Common Types Data Center Storage Configuration

Direct Attached Storage (DAS)

Direct attached storage refers to hard disk drives (HDD) and solid-state drives (SSD). Rather than connecting through a network, this type of storage is attached directly to the host server. The host computer controls DAS.

This is the most common type of data center storage.

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Network attached storage is a data center storage methodology allowing multiple users to retrieve data from centralized disk capacity over a TCP/IP network.

NAS include storage devices like disk arrays and CD/DVD drivers as well as embedded system software. This form of storage supports cross-platform sharing.

Other supported protocols include Network File System (NFS), Common Internet File System (CIFS), File Transfer Protocol (FTO), Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and more.

Storage Area Network (SAN)

A storage area network is a high-speed network established and dedicated to storage and independent of the TCP/IP network.

SANs connect servers to logical disk units (LUN) and provide block-level network access to data center storage.

SANs are currently recognized for high performance amongst data center storage solutions. Their adoption of high-end RAID arrays ensures a well-designed SAN will be highly available and resilient.

Important Things to Remember When Consider Choosing Your Data Storage Strategy
